There are two facts about me that I often don't like to admit.
1. I don't like bacon. 2. I don't like chocolate.
I know; there is a serious problem here. So when I got the Paleo Chocolate Lovers' Cookbook by Kelly Brozyna of The Spunky Coconut, my family was way more excited than I was. Sorry. But then... I started cooking out of it and it is starting to change my mind about chocolate! Shhh. I think I like it... Anyways, I made the chocolate pie.
Paleo desserts tend to be difficult with ingredients that are hard to find. This pie, however, was so easy! Coconut milk and dates were the only unusual ingredients, and those were easy to pick up at the store. I didn't have walnuts, so I used pecans instead. That worked out perfectly. Also, I used a springform pan instead of a pie plate. I did that mostly because I'm lazy and wanted an easy way to transport and slice the thing for the holidays. Again, worked out great.
I made three desserts for Thanksgiving:
1. Bourbon Pecan Pie from the Food Network Magazine
2. Italian Cream Cake from Martha Stewart
I asked my family to rank them in order of preference. They all liked the chocolate pie the best. So there! Paleo desserts are not only just as tasty-- they can be better than traditional baking!
If I ever do make anything with chocolate, I always add a little bit of coffee granules. It enhances the chocolate flavor and gives it a unique richness and depth. I added about a teaspoon to the food processor in this recipe. It was perfect.

ReplyDeleteHere's why chocolate must be Paleo: Back in the day, without artificial light to confuse the body, women were all on the same cycle. This means they all had PMS at the same time. Somebody HAD to figure out the wonders of chocolate back then or there would have been a mass murder of cavement at the first, "Ooona, what wrong with you?"
ReplyDeleteI hope it'll soon be Paleo Chocolate Lover's Chocolate Pie :)

And I don't feel bad about getting a tiny bit now and then because it's almost a health food. :) My favorite chocolate dish is really hard to pinpoint, but I would say it's probably scotcheroos. I can't have them anymore because I've developed a peanut allergy (sad), but I remember how wonderful they were. Not healthy. Not paleo. Totally unhealthy and really good.
