Paleo Slow Cooking ReviewI was lucky enough to be able to review Chrissy Gower's Paleo Slow Cooking: Gluten Free Recipes Made Simple book. It really is the simplest approach to paleo. Those of you out there who complain about how time-consuming and expensive paleo is can shut up now. This book is full of straightforward, delicious recipes that not only can be prepared ahead of time but they don't cost alot to make.
When I review something, I prefer not to just read it and assess its quality. I want to offer you a couple of my test-kitchen reviews of this book by walking you through my personal experience preparing a few of the recipes in the book.

The first recipe I tried in Chrissy's book was the Carne Asada. I didn't even get a picture of the final product because it was devoured by very happy ravenous beasts who visited my house the evening it was prepared. Even my super picky little boy who hates shredded meat, wrapped it up in a lettuce leaf and ate it. I do have a photo of it in the slow cooker. The cool thing about the recipes in this book is that they are simple enough to be versatile. For example, this Carne asada simply calls for a well balanced spice rub and a hunk of meat. I didn't have onion granules or chipotle seasoning so I just substituted a half of a sliced onion and 1 minced chipotle pepper in adobo. The result was perfect.

The second dish was a treat we can't wait to have again. The spicy sweet potato chowder with chicken. The only change I made to the recipe was that I was too lazy to pre-sautee the veggies before adding them in the slow cooker. I added them raw and the whole thing turned out perfectly. I added one more jalapeno than the recipe called for (I love spice, you know), and for an extra gourmet touch, a splash of sherry to taste. This chowder made my house smell heavenly. It was a huge hit for all three of us.
I think this chowder would be a perfect meal for a large crowd-- I'm thinking Thanksgiving and Christmas on this one. My family is enormous, so we are always looking for hearty soups to keep tummies full on a budget. This is a great recipe for that! In fact, most of Chrissy's recipes meet that criteria. Paleo Slow Cooking will save you time, money and possibly Christmas.

Chrissy and her crew have been so gracious to give away a copy of her awesome new book!
